It's a symbolic, emotional, but ultimately hollow gesture, nothing more.
I think if I were an American soldier and willing to die for my country and you were the Secretary of Defense and you said something like that, I would savour the moment in time when asking for a dishonorable discharge, would eclipse the pride I would have felt as a soldier.

And I'm not even American.
