I think you are right. But I think those who would use those attitudes wouldn't necessarily start at that point but rather digress to that point due to whatever dissatisfaction they had with the war in general.
In other words, if things went as planned in Iraq, assuming a successful plan, ( in/out, fewer casualties, some semblence that things were better after other than before) this wouldn't be an issue.
And I understand your point about wanting to be on track and preoccupied with something other than signing letters, but that relatively small gesture of condolence would go a long way for some that soldiers are not commodity in someones game of war and for others that feel this war has gone off the rails.
