The reason the Empirical scientific method is so elegant is that it allows for theories to be formed for things that are entirely unobservable. We have no proof that extra-terrestial intelligence exists, but we can theorize that it certainly does by extrapolating from Astronomical observation. Without Faith entering in to the picture we can theorize from the number of known solar systems with planets similiar to our own that the probability of intelligent life existing out there is near 100%.
On our own floating lump of rock would you subscribe to a Gaia-type intelligence superstructure governing the structure of life as we know it?
