The difference between Mezcal and tequila:
Technically, tequila is a form of mezcal, the difference aside from a slight differences in the processing and requirements to what the final product must consist of the major difference is location. Like bourbon is technically whiskey, the difference is bourbon is distilled in Bourbon Co. Kentucky. This is more commonly know in the wine making business, where region is why a particular wine has its name (i.e. champaign or chianti) and not the grape that the wine is made from.
The same is true for mezcal: Tequila is made in the state of Jalisco and Mezcal is made in the state of Oaxaca.
