there's certainly differences, but there's plenty of differences between the orignal grunge bands too. i'd say the bands i listed are undeniably influenced by popular music (grunge) in the early 90's. default and nickelback are sanitized and over-produced 2nd rate grunge.
EDIT: if you don't believe me, allmusic.com lists default, nickelback, and bush as grunge and/or post-grunge
