The Yanks just finished stealing Stanton back from the Mets for a piece of crap, Felix Heredia. Exactly how a team with has won their division for 9 of the last 12 years (and placed 2nd the other 3) has to "keep up" with a team that has won their division exactly ZERO TIMES in that same 12 year stretch and that has been owned by Atlanta since the first Gulf War is beyond me. I'm not even going to mention the 2000 World Series. Oops, too late, I did.
You also assume the Yankees wanted Pedro. They didn't. They got the starter they were after, Pavano. The Yankees making the offer to Pedro was to drive up his price to the point where the Sox had to spend money they would need to sign a real FA, like Varitek, or keep him off the team. Again, mission accomplished.
Look for a crappy year from Pedro. Who was the last free agent who came to the Mets and had a great first season? Tom Glavine? Oh wait, maybe it was Mo Vaughn? No, How about Jeromy Burnitz? Roberto Alomar, Pedro Astacio... stop me when I get to one...
Another 4th place finish for the New York Mess.
