I know quite a few people who hunt with .44 magnums and a couple who occasionally bring out the 10 mm with 6" barrels and special ammo. Hell, a .44 magnum with say a 10" barrel and scope on the top is very accurate at that distance.
Now, as far as the 10mm goes, we're probably not talking about shooting out to 100 yards here, although it's quite possible. Hunters come closer than 100 yards to whitetail everyday though. Ever have one wander 10-15 yards from your tree stand? It's not that uncommon.
As long as you are comfortable with the shot you take I would say it's perfectly responsible, and legal, to hunt deer with handguns. You should google it to see how common it is.
