What? I wasn't aware he was offered the Lakers head coaching spot. Are you sure about that? It's a shame he got fired in this fashion (just four games into the season), but the program was really headed in the wrong direction. A lot of the team was totally unhappy with the way things were done and one of our top young players actually transferred to Kansas this past offseason because of it. Others have shown their displeasure and others have talked about transferring out as well. I rooted for the guy, but it really was only a matter of time before he was given the boot. I just wish it could have been in a more timely manner.
It's a shame he couldn't make much of the momentum following that Elite Eight appearance a few years ago. But, at least now USC is about to pick up a top coach...Rick Majerus is in serious talks with the University about the vacant spot, but I'm concerned about his health and how long he'll be able to stay with the program if he doesn't get that in check soon and thoroughly. There are a lot of other great possibilities such as the current Pitt coach (his name eludes me at the moment) and Paul Westphal (former Trojan player and NBA coach, now with Pepperdine). I just hope AD Mike Garrett can strike gold twice and pick up a great hoops coach to complement his acquisition of Pete Carroll on the gridiron.
