My cousin actually got one of those things for Christmas about 10 years ago. We all knew it was stupid, but we had to try it just to see. It actually worked in the right kind of snow (when it was just around 32º out and nice and sticky). Otherwise (when it was too cold out), the snow was too powdery and just didn't ball right.
Unfortunately, when the snow was in that perfect condition for balling, it was also heavier and we put too much pressure on the plastic handle. It broke the second day he had it.
Stupidest invention ever? I'd say probably not.
My advice to you, now that you have it, would be to use it as either a mellon-baller or a cat poop scooper. Or both.
