It's my impression that dating services create a lot of phony entries in their database to make people think that really attractive people are actually using their service. Call me cynical, but look at fark.com's personals for instance - all their featured profiles have pictures that are professionally shot, they almost look straight out of a stock photography portfolio.
I've heard of online dating services working out, but something tells me he's better off using one of the more personalized dating services that run locally that guarantee X amount of matches for X amount of dollars, not those $25 free-for-alls that you see online.
