The Republic of Garantulan is a tiny, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its absence of drug laws. Its compassionate, cynical population of 5 million are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."
The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, corrupt, socially-minded morass -- juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and Social Welfare. The average income tax rate is 43%, but much higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Information Technology.
Crime -- especially youth-related -- is well under control, despite the fact that it is difficult to make it through a day without breaking one of the country's many laws. Garantulan's national animal is the pig, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the kruunu.
