I worked for the N.Y. Mets' single-A farm team in Columbia, S.C., about 10 years back when the manager was former big-leaguer Ron Washington. Well, one night the first-base ump made a few calls ol' Ron didn't think too much of. After the last of them, he came out and had a world-class argument with the ump. After getting thrown out, he proceeded to walk over to first and pull it out of the ground. He then took it into the clubhouse and locked the door. After about a 15-minute delay, Ron finally opened the door and gave the base to one of the team officials ... spray painted day-glo orange.
