I use my local little Mom & Pop hardware store, wherever possible. That's not to say that I do not ever go to Lowes, or Home Depot, but I much prefer that my "home improvement dollar" go to where it's appreciated a little more. It may be a little more expensive, but what price is service, knowledge, the fact that they actually know my name and can be relied upon to provide a cup of hot coffee, or a free bag of popcorn and a yarn or two? Any questions that I have are answered promptly, courteously and accurately.
