You play the first game? Because knowing the back story helps. Also, the more you play, the more that is revealed. Particularly towards the end. Obvious, yeah I know.
edit - after reading your post I see that you have. Well, I'd suggest playing the first game over. that's what I did. It's decent on the Source engine.
