Yeah, I know it's an exaggerated stereotype, but there is a certain amount of truth to it. If you spend 12 hours a day doing some sort of manual labour, then go home to your rural abode which may or may not have TV/internet access, you're much less likely (in my opinion) to be well-informed on "outside" matters than someone like me, a student who does an absolute maximum of 8 hours of work per day, where much of that 8 hours is linked with social and political issues.
