Have you considered getting an Apple iBook? They are light and small, and you can pick one up for under 1,000, DVD, CDR, and wireless built in. I have one and I absolutely love it. Apple is usually rated very highly for reliability and service. I know they aren't for everyone, as some people will only buy PCs but you may want to at least check one out.
