A hub is like a pool where all the machines on the network share their communication.
A switch allows the machines to communicate more directly with one another (i.e. they don't all share the same 'pool' of information)
A router is a thing that connects different and often distant networks together i.e. Many people connect to their ISP via a broadband router.
