Yes, that's what I've done for my other games. However, Half life 2 authenticates over the internet - theoretically making the CD authentication useless. In fact, if you buy Half Life 2 on Steam, you don't ever even have to own a CD. The side effect is, though, that the Steam server can detect when you're using an altered binary, and I want to have access to Steam.
