I don't think the shoe customs are weird. It is only right to remove your shoes before walking around your house. Do you really want all that dirt on your rugs and floors? especially road dust, or what ever crap you may have stepped in? I had a friend visit once, who did not remove his shoes. When he left, I noticed that there was a large smear of dirt in my carpet by the couch where he was sitting.
That's why i have slippers or flip flops by the door ready to slip on when i come in.
Oh yes, I also shake out my shoes if i leave them outside, or if i put on my boots up at the cottage after being away for a while. Ontario is a natural habitat for the black widow spider, and I don't want to get bitten. Up at the cottage, there are Massassauga rattle snakes too. Better safer than sorry.
Aussies also have the reputation for being adventurous, and rowdy. A good bunch of partiers. Their only problem is that their beer isn't as good as ours... hehe
