Cool. it's an IHI. Good choice for the 1.8 liter, this turbo seems a little small for the 2.2 it was meant for.
Basically the nipple on the end of the control valve gets hooked to manifold pressure, ie boost. From my experience it would be best to tap pressure post intercooler, since the intercooler will provide a 1 - 3 psi pressure drop. Other than that, the wastegate should be cool. Might have to adjust the spring based on your intended level of 8 psi, I don't know how it comes setup stock.
Now if you want to get fancy, say with a stand alone fuel computer like a Haltech, you could hook a solenoid valve in between the source of boost and the wastegate. You can then use one of the PWM outputs to control the solenoid and in turn open and close the wastegate to affect things lke spool up and maximum boost.
Good luck, sounds like a hell of a fun project. I need to get off my ass and get a job so I can have some toys.
