There are currently in excess of 250,000 NFA weapons in private hands. That ain't rare. And the only difficulty in getting them is one of cost. If you can possess a firearm and it's legal in your state, you can buy a machinegun or "silencer". There are even ways around the photograph/fingerprints/CLEO signoff requirements. All it takes is cash, a clean record, and a willingness to jump through hoops.
