There are some locations where only the non-locals go to the drive-thru and those "who know" walk in. There was one McD's that I used to live close to that in the morning, I'd park, walk past the drive-thru line and go get my breakfast, then walk out and see those cars I walked passed only 2 or 3 spots further down the line.
Convenience doesn't necessarily mean speedy.
