I already bought Halo 2, and will most likely get Half-Life 2. I think the two games cater to completely different types of gamers. I'm actually surprised that people make so many direct comparisons between PC and Console games. Some people just can't get used to playing games on their computers. They don't have the time, resources, energy or knowledge to install the game, make sure all of the hardware is compatible, upgrade hardware. I personally like the customization that PC games offer, but many people find it daunting. The gameplay of PC games also tends to be less accessible to the mainstream gamer (my opinion). When console games are hard by default, people complain (e.g., Ninja Gaiden on xbox).
Halo 2 is easy to play in the sense that all I have to do is load it in my xbox and that is appealing to many people. Xbox live is so easy to set up and on my connection Halo 2 is almost completely lag free. It's also very accessible to many types of gamers because it is ridiculously easy on the easy mode, but it is damn difficult on Legendary. Also, Xbox Live forces you to play with other people whose ability level is approximately that of your own, making online play fun for the newest player and the most experienced.
Having said that, Half-Life 2 is gonna be awesome, but for different reasons, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
