the optimizations span all kinds of areas - Moox implements mmoy's code optimizations (i know that some involve image rendering)... additionally, SSE and SSE2 code are used where possible in M2 and M3 builds respectively, which provides a speed increase on modern CPUs...
Additionally, there are some settings that you can adjust that can also provide a nice speed increase:
