No no, a lot of H. P. Lovecraft's work was lifted into the very first edition of <i>A D&D: Deities and Demigods</i>, and subsequently removed. Shoggoths are in the novella <i>At the Mountains of Madness</i>, a pretty decent read, Lovecraft's homage to Poe through <i>The Tale of Arthur Gordon Pym</i>. Shoggoths actually make the same sounds as the birds in AGP.

Sort of formless, yet not so much ameobic as a amalgam of interchangeable, but squidgy parts. Also, that pic gives you an idea of the scale of the thing.
