My brother-in-law made one and I was so enamored with it, he made me an even bigger one for my birthday. We use aerosol hair spray for the "propulsion" system, the downside to that is all the workings get pretty gunked up after a few misfires. You also have to be quick to seal the chamber after filling it full of hairspray. In any case we can launch a potato about 900-1000 feet with it...pretty fucking cool.
He had a set of concrete steps in his backyard. We armed and fired from about 100 ft away and broke a small chunk off of one of the stairs. Scared the shit out of us. Up to that point it was a fun toy, but we then realized how much power it actually has.
Nighttime launches are absolutely spectacular. Since we use white pvc and we're using an explosion to eject the potato, the whole thing glows orange and belches fire about 6ft from the end of the tube.
I highly recommend that everyone at least witness a spud gun, endless entertainment.
