This never really happened, your opinion was shaped by a republican media apparatus that was much more sophisticated than the democrats ability to handle it, as you said perception is everything and shaping that perception (ie Swiftboat Veterans for Truth)

I think that the Republican party will sink to any low for power. I am amazed that they have lost none of their moral authority when the two shining media lights, Rush Limbaugh and the awesomely hypocritical bill o'reilly have been shown to be, respectively, a drug addict (excuse me, a prescription drug addict) and a power mad asshole. (you may be able to switch those around, I don't know bills' drug history)
