I agree one party rule for to long leads to problems, it also leads to fighting inside the group in power.
Democrats held the house for 40 years and it led to a lot of abuse and graft. Republicans fixed it a bit, but I'm sure if the Republicans are in power for another 30 years in the house they will have their own abuses.

Ustwo has really hit the nail on the head. (I'm not sure I've ever said that before!) Single party governance/dominance tends to lead to a weakening of the nation. The current situation concens me greatly, and I can only hope that the President and congressional leaders do not abuse their power. (However, as long as Tom Delay in House Majority Leader, I am worried that we will continue to have a single party system that ignores the opposition)
