Protection can be anything from a short prayer to a direct confrontation with a spirit in which you demand that it stay away from you. Failure to protect yourself can result in anyhting from a bad case of the willies to a pesky spirit to demonic posession.
Having abandoned the prayer route, I tend to meditate before going into a haunted place and let it be known that I do not wish to be in direct contact with anything. If I'm trying to feel something, I have to be ready to close my mind and break off contact with the non-material world at a moment's notice. If there's no open door, nothing can get in. It's hard to explain, you really have to develop your own method of doing it.
