I use cotton as I don't have custom made ear plugs and it's just more comfortable. Between motorcycles, a car with essentially an open exhaust, and seeing every metal band that came through town in the 80's and 90's, I have what I consider a noticable loss of hearing. Somewhere between the Miracle Ears commercials and the adults in Charlie Brown. Standing in the front, a foot from the speakers, didn't help either.
Sometimes it really is just too loud. (It's true what they say about getting old.) I can hear it better with ear plugs than without.
