Germans can write some damn fine lyrics - The Notwist, for example, don't seem to have a problem.
Ben Gibbard, for me, is a huge conundrum (the guy from Death Cab for Cutie and a billion other things). His lyrics can be simply masterful, and far more imaginative than a 100 other bands put together. They can also be cheesy and painful to listen to.
Like from Such Great Heights, a Postal Service song:
I am thinking it's a sign/ That the freckles in our eyes are mirror images/ And when we kiss they're perfectly aligned
Blech. But then, the song before it on the album, The District Sleeps Alone Tonight, is perfectly written. Go figure.
