Breaking the cycle of the two party system will require a huge amount of publicity and a single third party that people will vote for. If you start introducing too many it'll spread the votes too thin. This is the inherent drawback in the multi-party system - smaller parties draw the votes away. A well known example of this is Ralph Nader. He'll take some votes away from Kerry, but none (or hardly any) from Bush.
