Santa Cruz, just south of the Bay Area on the Monterey Bay
1)Fourth-highest rents in the state -- higher even than San Jose -- yet there are few good-paying jobs. Housing prices go without saying -- starting at $500K for something barely big enough to swing a cat in.
2) Worse traffic than even most places in the Bay Area, and more dangerous roads. Highways 1 and 17 look like they were designed by Steven Spielberg for a chase scene from an Indiana Jones movie.
3) A lot of liberal hypocrisy. I am liberal, but I do tire of people who are all for social action and for affordable housing for lower-income people -- as long as it's not in their neighborhood. Shit, we're talking about employed people who do low-paying but necessary jobs, not welfare recipients.
