I have not used this book, but i learned C and C++ from the same series and they were excellent books for learning a new language from the ground up.

also as a general programmer reference i recommend http://safari.oreilly.com it has 2500+ titles of the oreilly catalog online. you can add up to 10 of them to your bookshelf, print chapters as needed and have the ready reference for $14.95/mo.

Its pretty sweet for students who have specific short term needs and dont want to buy a bunch of books.
