It wasnt the ride quality that created the shift to FWD, the shift came about for many reansons, one of the main ones if not the main reason, needing vehicles that handled better in bad weather. The FWD layout was much better at handling wet roads, and snow covered roads than RWD was(for the majority of drivers). With the onset of more wide spread traction control and handling control, that advantage has been all but eliminated, giving automakers the option of going back to RWD.
