I can't say for sure, but I would imagine that the Pharoah and his cohorts were not the only one who knew how to write. Certainly if my firstborn (and my animals) were killed in a plague of this magnitude, I'd make note of it with the burial. And this would have affected thousands, maybe millions, of families.
