I think that the reason these show draw huge audiences is because of their 'reality' value. This being in the sense that the viewers can relate to the contestants in some way.I suppose thats the reason the contestants are introduced the way they are ie. middle age divorced stockbroker from... Although this may sound like an advert in the personals column of the newspaper,people will try to 'match' themselves to a particular contestant and then see or try to predict how they would have handled a certain task/situation, compared to the contestant. People find it difficult/impossible to relate to celebs so this offers the alternative.
Thats my take on the issue.
