Skipping

Hi to all you fitness buffs out there.
I just wanted to know the benefits of skipping as a stand alone exercise? Can you lose serious weight this way? Whats the best way to go about doing this?
My program is:100 skips then some weight training, then 100 skips, then weights or pushups etc
I do this until I've done about 600 skips.i usually have about 30sec break after each set of skips before starting with the weights.

Is this workout good enough or should i up the intensity/number of skips?
I'm not looking to have big bulging muscles,I just want a well toned upper and lower body, and get rid of the fat thats developed around my waist. I'm not overweight, just a little around the middle

Thanks in advance for all you guys advice aswell as the avice in the other threads
