My guess is that they've never heard a missle, or a jet aircraft at 500+ mph from close range. Thus how would they know the difference when they heard one for the first time in their life? Answer: they didn't - it's just that the sound was so different to them than (1) a plane landing or taking off or (2) a plane traveling 500 mph that's 20,000 ft in the air; that they guessed it sounded more like what a missle would sound like.
