Through a careful, and ligitimate evaluation and understanding of what will indeed be in the best interest of the child. There are times when the relationship of the Mother and Father of said child is either unhealthy, or dangerous for the longterm outlook of the child. In my previous marriage there was little if any love remaining between us, and it was becoming obvious to our son. I felt it would be benefitial in the long run for his future mental developement, to remove this unhealthy relationship from his view.
My Ex-wife is a christian Minister, and has sole custody of my son, at my request. I felt it would be selfish and wrong to pull this young mind in multiple directions before his developement had reached a point where emotions were in balance with logical thought. He is mentally and physically better off than he would have been had we continued to be together, of this I have no Doubts. He is now ten years old and can understand and talk about the situation, and most likely has a far better grasp on human relationships as a result of our descision.
To subject a developing mind to the destructive nature of a failed marriage is, in my opinion, far worse than having the fortitude to correct that failure in an effort to give your child a better life.
