no, what you're teacher's telling you is true; one of my teachers showed me the same thing a few years ago. think about it another way:
.3 repeating is equal to 1/3, and
.6 repeating is equal to 2/3, so
.9 repeating is equal to 3/3 which is equal to 1.
it's just one of those crazy things in math.
