Just took him to the petsmart vet and they strongly believe it was insufficient heating in his tank. Apparently for a 55 gallon tank you need a 150W bulb instead of our 75W bulb.
Went ahead and got him some medicine and a couple anti-bacterial shots just incase - hopefully all turns out well. I will follow up in a couple days for anyone that cares to see how it turned out.
