I don't think phred's concerns are too necessary - not unfounded, but not necessary. From what I understand these pilots all have to go through psychological examinations, rigorous background checks, etc.
My only concern with guns on a plane is if one shot were to go through the plane itself and disrupt the presuure, etc. That could be a big disaster (of course, not as bad as if the plane crashed into a building)
