Yep, that what strategy games are like. There wouldnt be much strategy if you could keep your character for every matches. In the story mode, you do get to keep your character, but single player mode and competitive play modes are very different.
Since you seem to have no idea what the genre is like, your first time playing it should be a very fun experience. I still remember the first time I played Wc2 and starcraft.
