I played both quite a bit around 1 year ago online, so that's most of my experience.
D2-Online, it pretty much is divided into groups of casual, intermediate, and diehard. Much like a MMORPG, only there isn't the same time investment. D2 also can get very repetetive, unless you like trying different character strategies. Also, most of the intermediate and up players online do alot of pvp. Around a year ago there were very rampant hacks, bugged items, bots, etc. Pretty much you name it, it was there. They did a supposed final patch which cleaned up alot, but whether it's still clean I don't know. Typical experience was to find a friend or beg to get rushed through the game, hang out and level in the cow board, and then build your character with the accumulated points. At that point, you try to find the best gear possible, either by trading or farming. Any moderate pvper needs relatively expensive gear, and alot of time is spent trying to get minor bonuses. Many people also just play the secondary market. I know they cut down on the ease of rushing, but some people I know who still play say that rushing is still SOP. Some people I know say offline or online solo (no trading or other contact) make the game alot more fun and difficult, but once I beat hell I lost intrest.
WC3-Warcraft online is divided into people playing the basic game (1v1 or teams, some free for all as well) and people playing mods. Many people playing the basic game are very hardcore, and spend hours perfecting strategies and watching replays. They also will often have high ratings, and play mainly to climb the ladder. Often playing 1v1 can be unfufilling, as matches don't last long if you are rushed early and don't prepare. This can lead to doing the same things over and over, making the game repetetive. One of the best aspects is the mods. They are more casual, and sometimes more challenging. They are things like capture the flag, strongpoint defence, hero arena, and many other variations. They even had some that progressed more like traditional rpgs, and even allowed you to save your character. Me and most of my friends moved to playing just the mods. As for hacks, besides a map hack there isn't much floating around.
Personally, if I were to play one again, it would be WC3, just for the mods (matter of fact, I think ill reinstall it now).
