Diablo 2 - Its mostly an action oriented and bit more mindless game. Strategy revolves around finding good and appropriate equipement, choosing skills carefully, etc. Most of the thrill is from collecting that "perfect" weapon or getting a lvl 99 character.
Warcraft III - Much more of a thinking man's game, and everything revolves around strategy. Theres a beginning, middle, and ending game battle plan, just like chess, and involves more of being able to manage Hero creeping (kinda like Diablo) along with expansion, recon, resource management, unit production, research, and defense. It's a much deeper game, although lacks some of Diablo IIs fun mindless aspects. There are also countless original Mods that range from Diablo-like hero quests to really quirky mini games.
Thats my rundown. I honestly recommend you play both.
