This was UT's best chance to beat OU in a while. They might lose four more in a row. A lot of the defense is graduating this year, and with Adrian Peterson around for at least two more years, Texas has no chance.
The defense played outstanding today, even though they couldn't hold the long run that well, OU hit a wall every trip into the red zone. They (Texas' defense) must have been so frustrated with the ULTRA-conservative playcalling by the coaching staff until the game was in desperation time. Young wasn't getting the offense moving at all, would it have hurt egos too much to even try Chance Mock for a few series, especially after the turnovers?
Mack Brown is a weird coach. He doesn't coach to win, he coaches not to lose. I mean, this team hasn't had an offensive identity for 5 years. One week they are a power football team, the next they are a conservative, run on third and long team, and the next week they are a play-action, rollout passing team. They can't seem to figure out how to make their offense get into a rhythm, and that is a shame with the caliber of their defense this year.
Steve Spurrier would be an interesting candidate for the head coaching job. It wouldn't be an ugly change, since it would just be like a little "upgrade" at the head coach position. He's just as much of a "good old boy" as Brown so he will appeal to alumni/parents, and he's a phenomenal recruiter as well. And you know he would put beating OU at the top of his list; there are few coaches who prepare for rivalry games better than this man.
This loss might have hurt UT more than last year's blowout. It will be interesting to see how they bounce back.
