I think in the long run it would've evened out to be nothing.
While there is much fact-checking ability in the internet, the internet also spreads something's popularity. That would really cancel things out.
And it is key to note that if the German government is keeping things away from the rest of the world, the rest of the world won't have many if any facts to present other than the image given.
