I am conservative, and that is not what I think. I think the 'welfare state' includes subsidies to, for example, dairy farmers, the steel industry, Chrysler (if you remember the government guaranteed loans) Whenever the government takes my money for the benefit of others it is a perpetuation of the 'welfare state'. I say let me keep my money and I will decide who and how I want to help people. Trust me, I would help more people if I could keep more of what I work for.
The governments role is to regulate commerce, not manage it.
