Well, it's not nearly old enough to be called a classic, yet, but I would highly recommend
Hedwig and the Angry Inch. It's the story of a transsexual rock star who flees East Berlin to come to America, only have the wall fall a few months after she leaves. Once she gets to America she falls in love with Tommy, who becomes her musical protege, and then leaves her for fame and stardom.
It's based on a play of the same name by John Cameron Mitchell (who plays Hedwig). The story is funny and tragic, but the music is the kicker. You'll be singing along to all the songs in your second viewing. Hell, you may even dress up and go to a shadow play if you live in LA.
